Star Academy serves students with learning differences, ages 8-18. Of the students who attend Star, one-third are gifted, one-third are average, and one-third are below average. These students greatly benefit from the very small class sizes, wholistic hands-on, state frameworks curriculum, and the calm nurturing environment. Star Academy’s unique program draws students from all over the Greater Bay Area, including Marin, Napa, Sonoma, the East Bay, San Francisco, and the South Bay. Over half of the 40 students who attend Star carpool in vans each day due to the long distances they must travel to attend Star. Students who leave Star Academy go on to many worthy pursuits including college, the military, and full time work, often in technical fields. Younger students who attend Star are often mainstreamed back into public or regular education schools or enroll in specialized or technical high schools or vocational training programs.
Students who attend Star Academy may have special needs demonstrated in one or a combination of the following Learning Differences:
- Dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia
- Nonverbal Learning Disabilities
- Attention Deficit or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
- Mild to Moderate Neurological Anomalies
Other Differences:
- Social Immaturity
- Limited skill in organization and sequential thought
- Difficulty with task completion
- Low Self esteem
- Delay in age appropriate athletic skills
