Our Students
Star Academy serves students in first through 12th grade. Students from all over the greater Bay Area attend Star Academy, including: Marin, Sonoma, Napa, and the North Bay; Berkeley, Oakland and the East Bay; and San Francisco and the South Bay.
Students served are typically capable and motivated to learn. Some are gifted. Many of our Bay Area special needs students are at grade level or above grade level in certain subjects but below grade level in other subjects, due to difficulties with one or more of the following:
- Dyslexia
- Phonemic awareness
- Reading fluency
- Reading comprehension
- Auditory processing
- Expressive and/or receptive language
- Working memory
- Sequencing (ordering numbers, thoughts or ideas)
- Math
- Writing skills
- Dysgraphia (difficulty with handwriting)
- Below-age physical coordination, gross or fine motor skills
- Low self esteem
- Anxiety
- Executive function
- Aspberger’s Syndrome
- Nonverbal learning disabilities (NLD)
- ADD/ADHD
In addition, many of our students need support in the following social areas
- Social thinking and behavior
- Social communication skills
- Awareness,
reading and interpretation of non-verbal social cues
Student alumni Cary Dunne serves as an example of what is possible with the effective, individually tailored education offered at Star Academy.
