The Triple Bind: Saving Teenage Girls from Today’s Pressures
Speaker: Dr Stephen Hinshaw
Saturday, February 11
9:00am - 3:00pm
The upcoming 2012 AET Bay Area Conference features internationally recognized psychologist and researcher, Dr. Stephen Hinshaw, whose work has been instrumental in bringing the plight of today’s troubled adolescent girls to public attention. Dr. Hinshaw’s interactive presentation will focus on what he calls “The Triple Bind” - society’s expectation that girls excel at “girl skills,” achieve “boy goals,” and be models of female perfection 100% of the time. These stresses have resulted in an increase in aggressive behavior, eating disorders, depression, and even suicide especially among the many young women with undiagnosed, non-hyperactive ADHD. Perhaps most insidious is the fact that many of these self-destructive behaviors are done in secret in order to maintain a façade of normalcy.
Participants will be able to:
- Identify the pressures that lead girls to self-destructive behaviors.
- Describe the role played by genes, hormones and biology.
- Explain how traditional feminine qualities put girls at risk of anxiety and depression.
- Describe how our culture’s over sexualization sets girls up for crisis.
- Summarize how the cyber culture only exacerbates the bind girls find themselves in.
- Explain why an increasing number of girls are channeling pressure into violence.
- Apply strategies for identifying these often hidden behaviors.
- Implement strategies that are helpful in remediating this problem.
