San Rafael, CA: On February 4th, Star Academy, a school for students with learning differences, received the keys to a newly-remodeled, 20,000 sq ft, custom-designed building in San Rafael. This building, a gift from an anonymous benefactor, will become the new home for Star Academy, which has been based in San Anselmo for the past twenty years. “This is a timely gift of enormous proportion," said Susan MacKay, President of Star Academy's board of directors. "We are deeply grateful for the generosity with which it was given, and enthusiastically look forward to our move date. Our benefactor was inspired by Star’s mission, by the importance of our work serving students with learning differences, and by the effectiveness of our program. The gift provides an incredible opportunity for Star to expand its enrollment and to provide innovative special education to more students in the greater Bay Area."

Star Academy draws students from all over the Bay Area due to the unique nature of its program: small class size; individualized curriculum; multi-sensory, hands-on teaching techniques; arts education, and a comprehensive staff of specialists working individually and in small groups with students, all under one roof. Star Academy Director, Soula Dontchos, has described Star Academy’s goal as “assisting students to achieve skills, compassion, and thinking which will enable them to lead gratifying, productive lives, and to make positive contributions to the communities in which they live." With the growing need for schools serving students with learning differences, Star plans to nearly double its student population over the next few years.

Star is accepting applications for the current school year and next year. For more information, contact Star Academy at 415-456-8727 or visit www.staracademy.org.
