A note to Alumni Families
Can you remember that moment when you discovered Star Academy and felt a glimmer of hope that you had finally found a school that could meet the needs of your child? Do you remember the wave of relief you felt inside?
As parents of children with special needs, we have been on a common path and are all too familiar with the stressful roller coaster ride of searching for an educational setting that works for our kids. And as alumni parents of Star Academy students, we all know what an important place Star was for our kids. While certainly not perfect, Star Academy offered us a landing pad-an amazing little place where our kids were nurtured, challenged, encouraged and educated in a way that spoke to their strengths and took on their difficulties in the most creative of ways.
We all know it wasn't the facility or equipment that made Star so great - it was the extraordinary people and innovative curriculum at work inside those walls. After six years at Star Academy, my son enrolled in a boarding school on the East Coast last year. Thanks to Star, he made that challenging transition successfully. Star inspired a real desire and enthusiasm to learn; as a result, he has become more independent and a self-advocate for his own special needs.
Now as a board member at Star, I hear similar stories from other parents:
Even though we can barely afford it, our child actually likes school and is really improving in his skills for the first time in years…
I never thought it would happen, but my daughter is understanding and achieving in math!…
Thank goodness I don't have to schlep around to a million different therapists - now my son gets the services he needs at school...
I hope you will join me in supporting the terrific programs at Star. Tuition alone does not cover Star's budget; only with donations from parents, alumni families and friends can Star meet its program goals and continue to grow and innovate.
Your support will go directly into the core programs at the school: the Making Math Real program out of UC Berkeley that has revolutionized mathematics education at Star; our scholarship fund to help the growing number of families who need tuition assistance and do not receive funding from local school districts; and funds to expand our cadre of first-rate therapists, specialists and educators who work with the children every day.
Alumni parent participation is essential to our ongoing fund raising efforts. Please consider making a contribution, at whatever level you can. Every gift counts!
I am incredibly grateful that Star was there for our son when he needed it. Please join me in giving back to this school that gave our kids so much. Let's see to it that Star Academy thrives and continues to provide this unique and outstanding learning environment for many years to come.
