Art Therapy
While other schools consider art as an expendable "extra", at Star Academy it is an integral part of the program. All students participate in art and gain valuable skills which transfer to the more traditional classroom setting. In art they learn:
- Organization
- Task analysis
- To set reasonable goals
- An appropriate way to express emotions which may feel to risky to express any other way
- Fine motor control
- Abstract thinking
Music Therapy
The music program also includes all students. Besides helping students improve their auditory discrimination skills, the music program teaches artistic interpretation and evaluation. We also strive to impart an appreciation for different types of music. This year we will be learning about traditional American Folk traditions along with the historical context in which they occurred.
Occupational Therapy
All incoming students are evaluated by our occupational therapist for any deficits in:
- Postural stability
- Reflexes
- Sensory Processing
- Perceptual-motor planning and coordination
- Gross motor skills
- Fine motor skills
- Muscle strength
- Range of Motion
- Balance
- Self care skills
After the assessment, an indivdual treatment plan is created and implemented.
Feldenkrais
Some of our students need extra help in integrating their bodily movements to acheive better balance and an improved sense of proprioception (the ability to be aware of where your body is in space). Feldenkrais helps acheive these basic skills which are necessary for successful classroom learning.
