Star Academy is a non-profit, non-public school, located in San Rafael, CA, serving students with learning differences in grades 2-12. Star Academy provides a comprehensive, individualized education program for students with learning differences. Star Academy’s mission is to help students experience academic success through a multisensory approach.

 

Our students face mild to moderate challenges such as: dyslexia, executive functioning deficits, dyscalculia, auditory processing, dysgraphia, ADHD and Asperger’s. Elementary, middle and high school students all benefit from Star’s calm, nurturing, and supportive environment, which is conducive to learning.  High school students earn their high school diploma or certificate of completion and prepare to transition to college and/or other pursuits.

Current Open Position(s) for the 2020/2021 Academic Year: Head Middle School Teacher, Assistant Middle School Teacher, Head Elementary Teacher, Structured Literacy Specialist, MSLAT Specialist

 

 

Full Time Head Middle School Teacher

We are seeking a patient, kind and thoughtful educator to work with an assistant teacher in one of our classrooms. Candidates must have the following qualifications:
• Undergraduate college degree.
• Clear California Mild/Moderate Disabilities Credential required and must meet CTC requirements for working with students on the Autism Spectrum.
• Two years of experience working with students with learning differences in an educational setting.
• Knowledge of current remedial curriculum; Language Arts, Social Studies, Science and Math.
• Strong classroom management skills.
• Strong communication skills.
• Knowledge of the IEP process, including goal writing, meeting preparation/presentation and familiarity with SEIS.

Duties will include but may not be limited to:
• Case management of students on IEPs and privately funded students.
• Supervision of Assistant Teacher regarding classroom responsibilities, student monitoring and lesson plan implementation.
• Planning, preparing and delivering instructional materials that facilitate a positive and effective learning experience.
• Adapting teaching methods and materials to meet varying student needs and interests.
• Collaborating with specialists and other teachers to provide students with opportunities to observe, question and investigate while practicing a variety of academic and social skills.
• Supervising students during snack break, recess, lunch and transitions.
• Participating in full staff and team meetings.

Full Time Assistant Middle School Teacher

The Assistant Teacher is responsible for supporting the Head Teacher in managing all classroom responsibilities for a group of students with a variety of special education needs. 

Essential Duties include:
•Provide academic support to designated students
•Implement Lesson Plans that have been developed by the Head Teacher
•Assist Head Teacher in maintaining classroom student records accurately and completely, including weekly evaluations of student progress towards meeting IEP goals
•Assist in developing and maintaining behavioral approaches and discipline
•Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress and needs
•Collaborate with Star Academy staff regarding student goals and progress
•Monitor students at all times, including field trips
•Know and enforce all school rules and policies at all times

Related duties:
•Know and understand Public Law 94-142 and SB 769
•Maintain a neat, organized, visually appealing classroom space
•Supervise student events as needed
•Attend staff meetings and professional development trainings

Full Time Head Teacher – Elementary School

Full Time Structured Literacy Specialist 

The Structured Literacy Specialist will deliver structured literacy instruction to students in grades K-12 either 1:1, in small groups or in a whole small class setting. The Structured Literacy Specialist will be responsible for developing daily lessons that are explicit, systematic, and cumulative and which integrate speaking, reading, and writing. 

 

Candidates must have the following qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor of Arts Degree (Master of Arts Degree preferred).

  • Training in an accredited Structured Literacy program as identified by the Center for Effective Reading Instruction. (Certification at the Interventionist level preferred.)

  • Training in a Structured Literacy curriculum such as Wilson, the Sonday System, Language!, etc. a plus.

  • Experience in teaching students with Dyslexia using a Structured Literacy approach ensuring that all learning takes place through the simultaneous involvement of the Auditory, Visual and Kinesthetic motor channels.

  • A deep understanding of the structure of language, including phonology, orthography,  syntax, morphology, and semantics.

 

Duties will include but may not be limited to:

 

  • Case management of students involving assessing, writing measurable goals, and regularly reporting on goal progress for all students whether on IEPs or privately funded.

  • Planning, preparing and delivering instructional materials that facilitate a positive and effective learning experience.

  • Adapting teaching methods and materials to meet varying student needs and interests.

  • Collaborating with specialists and other teachers to enhance student outcomes

  • Participating in full staff and team meetings.

Full Time MSLAT Specialist 

The Multi-Sensory Literacy Specialist will deliver literacy remediation and instruction to students in grades K-12 either via 1:1, small groups or in a whole small class setting. The Multi-Sensory Literacy Specialist will be responsible for developing daily lessons that are explicit, systematic, and cumulative and which incorporate the Lindamood Bell ® methodology especially Seeing Stars® and Visualizing Verbalizing®. 

Candidates must have the following qualifications:
• Experience in the Lindamood Bell® methodologies.
• Experience in a Lindamood Bell® center as a clinician with pacing and testing experience, consultant preferred.
• Experience with learning differences in students grades 3-12.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to write lesson plans and clinical notes.

Duties will include but may not be limited to:

• Case management of students involving assessing, writing measurable goals, and regularly reporting on goal progress for all students whether on IEPs or privately funded.
